I had always had this rally on my short list of venues to attend in the near future. I got some time off so I decided to make the trip. Jackie decided to join me.
We headed out of town on Wednesday afternoon. I had to work until 12 noon, so Jackie rode over and met me at the Big Orange Box (Home Depot). The weather was in the mid 80's so it made the slab down 287 somewhat bearable. We made it to Amarillo around 7PM. I was beat as my day started at 4AM. This day was uneventful, just the way we like first boring days to be.
Day 2 (Thursday) started at 7AM. We took advantage of the free breakfast and then hit the road. We headed down to Tucumcari NM and then jumped on 104 over to las Vegas NM. This is not a bad stretch of road. We ran into Yeeha Stephen in Las Vegas. Yeeha tagged along and we headed over to Taos to get some lunch. We were making great time and would have plenty of time to pitch our tent before the darkness arrived.
We took a quick stop by Walmart as I needed to get some toothpaste, We then jumped up to the lodge. It is a very nice 20 mile jaunt to the lodge along a very nice road. When we arrived at the site, there were already a lot of people camping. We took the high ground and pitched our tents. The tempos were cool and it was a very pleasant afternoon.
One of the best things that I like to do after pitching my tent is to enjoy a beer and watch all of the bikes roll in. We hung out, enjoyed the adult beverages (served right on the deck) and chatted with new and old friends the day was a great one. Jackie, Yeeha and I made a couple of laps around the area, to check out the cool bikes. Kicking tires is always a good thing. We enjoyed the evening and hit the tents around 9:30PM. It gets really dark in those NM mountains.
It sounded like rain.. I looked out my tent and yep.. it was raining. It would rain all night long. It would rain all day on Friday and it was okay. Jackie and I were going to just hang out one day so we decided this would be the day. It was a good choice as it was wet and chilly all day long. We kicked tires, drank beer, chatted with moto friends and ate. then we did it all over again.
Friday night featured Green Chili stew and a mountain jug band. We just stayed inside drank a few beers and chatted with everyone.
This is what happens when my fat ass meets Jackies coffee cup on the bench. Poor cup did not have a chance.
I know that the entire group was hoping for better weather on Saturday. The riders were starting to get cabin fever.
Rain sucks! Yes I said It. i know we need it here in n Texas but we really needed a break in NM. It did not happen. it rained and rained and did not stop. Jackie and I got up and ate breakfast and decided to head back to home a day early. We picked up camp in a nice down pour and rode down the mountain in some nasty weather. What a waste of good curvy roads. it was so wet they could not be enjoyed. Jackie and I made it back to Amarillo on Saturday evening around 5PM. We got up early Sunday and was sitting at home watching the games by 3PM. I placed 1375 miles on the Connie. It was not all bad. The Land of Enchantment BMW Riders put on a great show and we have already placed the date for next year on our calenders. Till next time.. Ride safe.
