Blue Bonnet Ride - Texas Hill Country

COG / TCAT - Blue Bonnet Ride - April 7-9, 2006
Hunt, Texas
Miles: 946

FRIDAY - We started off for the trip on Friday Afternoon. We had the bikes loaded and gassed and we were on the road by 1:09PM. We did the Dallas metro-plex schuffle, dodging cars, trucks and other large vehicles. We got out of town and hit 67 towards Cleburne. We went down to Commanche Texas and jumped on 16. This is when it hit me that we were away from town and heading down to the hill country. Good times were going to be had by all. The bad news was the WIND! Not gusts, or a few heavy winds, no this was mile after mile of 35-40 MPH winds. Not the best stuff for riding, but we fought on. This was the first time, I really noticed how good the bar risers feel. My wrists are not killing me and it does not feel like I am wrestling with the bike. I should have gotten the risers much earlier in my concours life. I need to thank Old Paul for the risers. He is way to good to me. Thanks again Paul.

This is when it hit me that we were away from town and heading down to the hill country. Good times were goingto be had by all. We arrived in Fredricksburg in time for Dusk and dinner. We hung out and then rode the rest of the way to the Rivers Inn in Hunt Texas. We were in our room, sleeping by 10:30. We were beat from all of the wind, but we were there and it was going to be a great weekend.

Saturday - We woke up, to the sound of rushing river water, birds chirping and a nice little sting to the crispness in the air. I went outside to get the bike ready for some twisties. It was a thing of beauty seeing all of those Connies in the parking lot.

We warmed up the bike and headed into Kerrvile to eat breakfast at the Cracker Barrel. The road from Hunt to Kerrville follows the river and was a nice twisty start to the day and a nice warm up for the roads we would see later in the day. Here are some pictures of the pack in the parking lot and eating inside the barrel.

We all ate to much, then headed out for some serious riding. We were going to hit all of the three's. You know 337, 336, 335. We were going to go thru places like Vanderpool, Leakey, Camp Wood all of those cool little hill country towns. Here is the group at the first stop.

The riding was great! I love all of the elevation change. Going fast and just enjoying the day. Life was good. We all pulled into Camp Wood for lunch. We were at a gas station, when Rob came into the station, with a police car behind him. The biggest redneck cop that I have ever seen gets out and walks up to Rob. He then says something that could not be made up. He said "Sir, I am not really in the ticket writing mood.. so you need to slow down when you ride into my town." This was really funny as we all had been riding faster than Rob, but he was the one on the bright shiny Sport Bike. It was funny. After we got done laughing, we asked the nice officer if he knew of a good place to eat. He sent us to this little BBQ stand, the food was not all that good. But no one was going to argue with that guy. Here are some pictures.

The roads were in great shape. There was a stretch that was under construction but nothing to bad. 335 has some cattle guards in some strange places but other than that it was all good. We stopped in Leakey and was taking a break, when a group of woman rode up and parked next to us. They were all decked out in Pink. The bikes were tricked out with paint, rims and that sort of thing. They said they had rode up from Laredo Texas. They all looked like they were having fun. It was cool to see these hip woman next to a bunch of us old COG guys. I have added a few photos of the ladies from Laredo. The first picture is Jamie changing.. I don't know why she did it there in front of the guys.. she said something about COG guys were hot! Hmmmm!

Here are some pictures from the road. Jamie likes to grab the camera and shoot some pictures while carving up some of the twisties. We hope you like them.

We all started to head back to the River Inn as Carl and his beautiful wife were getting the food ready to feed all of us who had been riding all day long On some of the best roads in Texas. I want to say thank you to the Two of them as the dinner was awesome. Thanks again ! On the way back we had to wait for some of the local goat traffic.

The food was awesome. Some great burgers and sausage as well as home made salads and a beautifully decorated cake. I know I ate my share and drank probably 1 too many beers but it was all good. This is what makes these things special. Sitting around talking with some old friends and meeting new ones. Great times were had by all. I know that when I went to bed I slept like a baby. Looking back on it, the day had been almost perfect. Great roads, no tickets and everyone made it home safe and sound, We ate too much and just enjoyed being people who have 1 thing in common, and that is the love of the two wheeled vehicles we call motorcycles.

We packed up and headed out on Sunday morning. We left camp arund 8:30 and headed towards enchanted rock. What a cool place. Was it worth $6 per person, not really as we did not do any hiking but it is a very pretty place. Take a look for your self.

Well after looking at the rocks for awhile, we decided we were hungry. We headed into Llano and stopped at Coopers for some BBQ. It is always a nice stop. There was a group of 20-25 Harley riders in there all headed back to Dallas. It is so funny seeing all of these proper older women all dressed in their Harley gear. Everyone was nice and the lunch was very very good. We hit the road after lunch and just enjoyed a wonderful day. Not too hot, not too cold just right for riding with gear on. Just a great way to end the trip. We pulled up at the garage at 6:35PM. We were tired, but the trip had been awesome. Thanks again to everyone who made this trip a huge success. Okay.. can we do ity again next weekend??

One last picture, it seems like Jamie my beautiful wife had a problem keeping her pants on this weekend..
